Nine
miles Northeast of Aberdeen, Mississippi, in rural Monroe County and about
one-half mile from the center of Old Athens (MS) community and the original
jailhouse lies the Howell cemetery.
Our line of the
Howell family originated in Laurens District, South Carolina, in the early
1700s. By 1812, Abraham and Sarah Ann Andrews Howell were enrooted to the
newly opened lands of Mississippi Territory. About 1818, this family
settled in the area and homesteaded a plot of land ceded to them by the
Chickasaw tribe. As the family increased to eighteen children, burial
ground was considered because by 1830, several of the children were buried
in the side yard by the old house. As time elapsed and as burial plots were
needed, the family continued to use the front yard of the Howell Home
place.
In 1867, Abraham Howell was placed in his choice plot and
in 1879, Sarah Ann Andrews Howell was laid beside him. No markers were
originally erected but through the years various members of the family
remembered their locations and that grandpa and grandma are buried in front
of Aunt Charlotte Howell Hollingsworth and Aunt Sarah McCloud Howell McCoy,
next to the county road. Descendants gathered money in the 1980s and
erected a dominating tall granite double marker placed in the correct
position in the cemetery resting under a huge oak tree.
On May 4, 1958, the Mississippi Historical Commission
dedicated the marker at Howell Cemetery. The marker reads:
