August 4, 1911

Death of JAMES J. EASTER
On Friday, July 28, JAMES J. EASTER, aged 65, died at Davis of paralysis. Burial took place at the Davis cemetery. He leaves a widow and eight children, all grown to adulthood. MRS. C. M. MAYES and MISS DELLA EASTER, two of the daughters, live in Sulphur. Mr. Easter’s death was the indirect result of an accident which happened to him on last May 11. He with his son, JOHN EASTER, was thrown out of a buggy, and received a broken arm and severe injuries on the head. The son had a broken arm and leg. Mr. Easter was an old Confederate soldier having worn the gray for three years. He participated in the battle at Bunker Hill, Louisiana in which he was wounded in the head by a shot. The family is grief-stricken and the community laments the demise of a high-minded, respected, useful citizen.3

He was buried on 1 August 1911 at Davis Cemetery, Davis, Murray County, Oklahoma.3
James Jefferson Easter and Andrew Coffman Legg lived on 3 July 1852 at Limestone County, Alabama; A Power of Attorney was issued from Sacksville R. Easter of Cherokee Co., Texas, guardian of Champion D. Easter's minor children (William C; Thomas T; John C; Ann F; and James J. Easter ) to Andrew C. Legg. Andrew C. Legg was the husband of Champion Dorcas Easter's sister, Terry Ann Easter Legg, who still resided in Limestone County, Alabama. The supposition is that while Sacksville, who lived in Texas, was the legal guardian of the children, the children actually lived in Limestone County, Alabama with their Aunt and Uncle, Andrew and Terry Easter Legg.4 According to the cited military service record (1) on microfilm at the National Archives, J. J. Easter, served in Company C, 12th Texas Infantry, CSA .Soldier's Rank_In Private. Soldier's Rank_Out Private. Three different Veteran's Pension applications of Sarah Elizabeth Easter, wife of James Jefferson Easter were disapproved because the authorities could not find any record of his service.(citation2).5,2

HISTORY NOTES ON JASPER EASTER Some time between the 1850 and the 1860 census, Jasper and Sarah moved their family to near Buena Vista, Chickasaw Co., MS. They left Mississipi on October 28, 1869 along with others in 16 wagons, drawn by oxen that made up a long caravan. The weather was almost perfect during the 48 days it took for them to reach Texas. There was only one death on the trip. Near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Tom King, Sarah King Easter's father died and was buried there. The Easter family came on to Covington, Texas where they lived for almost a year and then moved to nearby Bois d' Arc community. This account was written by Sara Thompson Easter on 5 June 1944.
