Pay voucher for Captain Lewis Easter -31 August 1816.
Lewis Easter was born in 1782 at Elbert County, Georgia.2 He was the son of James Easter and Sarah Thompson. Lewis Easter married Elizabeth Neal in October 1802 at Elbert County, Georgia.2 Lewis Easter died on 23 August 1851 at Monroe County, Mississippi. He was buried on 26 August 1851 at Lewis Easter Cemetery, Monroe County, Mississippi.
In 1791 Lewis was living in Wilkes County (later Elbert County ) Georgia in that he was mentioned in his father's will and it is indicated in the will that Lewis was "of age", or at least 18 at that time.1 In 1804, Lewis Easter acquired 120 acres of land located in Elbert County Georgia from William R. Powers. On January 10, 1810, Lewis Easter of Jones County, Georgia, purchased Lot 194, 9th District from William C. Barneth. On September 13, 1810, Robert Moore and Sarah Moore, his wife, conveyed to Lewis Easter of Jones County, Georgia Lot 169, 10th District. The deed was witnessed by Champion Easter, brother of Lewis. Muster Cards for Lewis Easter showing service from Aug 20, 1813 to Mar 8. 1814. Company Muster Roll records for the period November 21, 1814 to March 8, 1815 show that Lewis Easter commanded his own company of infantry in the 3rd Regiment of Georgia Militia commanded by Colonel Ezekiel Wimberly.3 Lewis Easter appears to have still been in the Army as a Captain on August 31, 1816. On that date he received payment for a voucher claiming pay and subsistance from November 21, 1814 to March 8, 1815. This voucher and the previously recorded Muster Rolls are the only existing records found in Lewis Easter's Military Records Jacket at the National Archives. The highest rank mentioned in these records is that of Captain as a Company Commander in the 3rd Regiment of Georgia State Militia.3 On March 22, 1819, Lewis resided in Madison County , Alabama. On that date, he, along with his brothers William and Champion, bought goods at the estate sale of one Benjamin Eddins. The will was probated October 1818 and the sale was held on 22 March 1819.4 He appeared on the census of 1825 at Monroe County, Mississippi; The 1825 Monroe County Mississippi Census lists 1 taxable "Louis" Easter as head-of- household consisting of 4 free white males and 3 free white females. Lewis Easter served as a Private in the Creek Indian War under Captain Joseph Howard. He also served in the 3rd Regiment (Wimberly's), Georgia Militia under Colonel Harris in the War of 1812. Later served as Captain of the Second Company in the 3rd Regiment of the Georgia Militia commanded by Colonel Ezekiel Wimberly, in the year 1814. Lewis Easter's last known involvement with the army is a military order from a Brigadier General Cocke which is addressed to Colonel Lewis Easter. This military order and the salutation has caused some researchers of the Easter genealogy to conclude that the rank shown on Lewis Easter's grave marker may be in error. It is believed by most researchers that the marker, as well as the records in the National Archives are correct. The explanation of the salutation "Colonel" in the orders to Lewis Easter can be one of two things; either the salutation is a "courtesy title" afforded a war veteran or, since General Cocke's rank is indicated as "Brigadier General, 1st Mississippi Militia" (a State, not a Federal unit), it is possible that Lewis held the rank of Colonel in the State Militia. No records have been found to confirm this. The original copy of the military order was in the possession of Mollie (Easter) Jones in the mid-1950's. The current location of the original is unknown but a certified photostatic copy of the original was filed as a part of the D.A.R. application of Miriam Baker Apperson of 120 Overbrook Road, Birmingham, Alabama. The known text of the military order is as follows:

ATHENS, MISSISSIPPI July 1831
Colonel Lewis Easter,

Sir I have detailed you a member of a Brigade Court Martial to be holden in the town of Hamilton on friday the fifth day of August next to assess fines on field officers of regiments and to hear appeals from inferior courts martial.......(missing).....where you are.........(missing)..... honor to be your old........... Cocke, Brg. (Brigadier General) BRG. 1 M.M.(Mississippi Militia). Lewis Easter is shown on the 1840 census for Monroe County, Mississippi (Quincy District) as being head of a household consisting of three 20 to 30 year old males, one 30 to 40 year old males, one 50 to 60 year old male (probably himself), and two 30 to 40 year old females. Land records for this period indicate that sections of land were recorded to: Jasper Easter (S12,T14,R18,Monroe County ) Oscar F. Easter (S11,T14,R17,Monroe County ) Micajah W. Easter (S10,T14,R17,Monroe County ) Micajah's section included the 80 acres comprising the farm of William Ira Easter. He appeared on the census of 1850 at Quincy District, Monroe County, Mississippi; In the 1850 census we find Lewis listed as 69 years old which would confirm his being the 50 to 60 year old male in the 1840 census listing of his household.

Lewis I. (Ivy) Easter was born circa 1832 at Monroe County, Mississippi. He was the son of Elbert Jefferson Easter and Sarah Ann Rucker. Lewis I. (Ivy) Easter married Regina A. D. J. Grubbs, daughter of Enoch Grubbs and Elizabeth C. Baker, on 6 August 1855 at Monroe County, Mississippi; 1850 census data showed that Regina Grubbs was 10 years old at the time of the census. If accurate, she would have been 15 years old when she and Lewis I. Easter, her step-brother, were married.1 Lewis I. (Ivy) Easter married Rebecca Howell on 7 October 1888 at Monroe County, Mississippi.2 Lewis I. (Ivy) Easter married Madiah Simmons on 6 December 1898 at Monroe County, Mississippi. Lewis I. (Ivy) Easter died circa October 1899 at Monroe County, Mississippi. He was buried after October 1899 at Lewis Easter Cemetery, Monroe County, Mississippi.
He purchased land from an unknown person 07 Oct 1837 in Monroe Co., Mississippi. He was inducted into the Confederate Army on 23 Apr 1861 in Aberdeen, Monroe Co., Mississippi to serve in the 14th Mississippi Infantry. The 14th Mississippi was organized in May and June of 1861, of companies which had previously been in the State service and was mustered into the Confederate service for twelve months.3 "Big Lewis" reported for active duty 28 Aug 1861 in Monroe Co., Mississippi. On August 28, 1861 the 14th came under the command of Simon Bolivar Buckner who later became Governor of the State of Kentucky. Interestly, by 1861 "Big Lewis" had a son whose middle name was Buckner. On the 13th of February "Big Lewis" and the rest of the 14th Mississippi, under the command of Simon Bolivar Buckner, moved into Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River. The 14th Mississippi was fortunate in that Simon Bolivar Buckner was one of the best generals in the Confederate Army and unquestionably the most able at Fort Donelson. Their misfortune was that Buckner was outranked by two other officers at the fort who were without doubt the most inept commanders ever produced by the Confederacy. One, General Gideon J. Pillow, is the only military officer of any army of whom General Grant ever spoke with open contempt. The weather had been unseasonably warm for several days but as Grant's Union forces moved to surround the fort, sleet and snow began to fall. In the battle to come, many of the wounded would freeze to death, unattended between the lines. Hundreds of others, wet and cold, would contract colds that would become pneumonia, condemning them to death long after the guns of the coming battle had grown cold. The ranking Commanders recognized that Fort Donelson, designed to counter gunboat attacks, not infantry assaults, was a death trap they could not defend. They decided to break out of Grant's encirclement and rejoin General Johnston and the rest of the Army. General Buckner strongly objected but was over ruled and placed in command of the force that would hold the line while the remainder of the Army broke out. Amazingly, the Confederate attack caught the Union army offguard and an escape route was broken through Grant's line. Just as General Buckner was about to take his troops offline and through that door to freedom, the door was closed by one of those inexplicable actions by inferior men that was so common in the Civil War. General Pillow, after fighting through Grant's line, suddenly ordered his troops back into the fort. Wet, cold, bleeding and beaten, "Big Lewis" and his fellow soldiers awaited the inevitable surrender. It is unlikely that he ever knew that one of the most famous statements of the Civil War was made about him and his fellow soldiers of the 14th Mississippi. General Grant, responding to Buckner's request for surrender terms, replied, "Complete and unconditional surrender. I propose to move on your works immediately." That surrender was effected and "Big Lewis", with the rest of the 14th Mississippi, was to spend the next eight months as a prisoner of the Union Army. The soldiers were later paroled at Vicksburg and told to go home. Being loyal to the Southern cause, however, they reformed the 14th Mississippi. Fate, in war, takes strange turns. "Big Lewis" and his fellow Mississipians must have felt badly that their attempt to rejoin General Johnston's army failed. But if they had succeeded . . . . then Lewis and the 14th Mississippi would have been in the vanguard of Johnston's forces as it came up from Corinth, Mississippi to an isolated little church called Shiloh where three of the bloodiest days of the Civil War would claim thousands, including the general who brought them there, Albert Sidney Johnston.4 On September 2, 1862, a little over six months after he was captured, Lewis I. (Ivy) Easter was removed from the prison camp at Camp Douglas, Illinois and sent to Vicksburg, Misissippi to be exchanged. He traveled to Vicksburg aboard the steamer Johnathan H. Done and was processed into parole on September 20, 1862 by N.G. Watts, Major, C.S.A, Agent for Exchange of Prisoners.3 Muster Roll card dated 22 Sep 1862 shows Lewis I.
