Samuel Gilbert Easter Family
Within the space of two years Helen Easter McGrew and her daughter, Carol McGrew Overcamp, were caught up in the military history of three little-known ancestors brought back into notice by genealogy research and a family reunion.
After researching his own genealogy, Carol's husband helped her look into her own family history and quickly found two ancestors in the Easter line who fought in the Revolution. They added a visit to two battlefields to a previously planned trip to South Carolina, stopping first at the Ninety Six National Historic Site near Greenwood Originally a trading post ninety-six miles (him mountains, Ninety Six became the site of both the first battle and nearly the last battle of the Revolution in South Carolina. While hiking the park trail they observed lour white posts marking the corners of the old jail. Here their ancestor, Benjamin Eddins, was held by the British in an attempt to turn him into a British spy or a British officer. Upon his eventual release he rejoined the American forces, serving under General Pickens for the remainder of the war. About 1830 Benjamin Eddins settled near Center Hill in eastern Limestone County. His daughter Fanny married Samuel Walker of Huntsville, briefly the Speaker of the Alabama House. Their daughter, Martha Jefferson Walker, eventually married into the Easter family.
From Ninety six they headed southwest to Washington, Georgia, and Kettle Creek Battlefield State Park. A stone road led back through a forest to a clearing above a ravine where two monuments recalled a little-known American victory. Here in 1779 .South Carolina troops under the same General Pickens, joined by Georgia patriots including James Easter of Elbert County, caught the British troops out foraging for food and drove them off. This battle deterred the British forces in Georgia from ever venturing far from Savannah again. Thirty five years later a list of jurors shows Champion Easter, one of James Easter's sons, in Limestone County. Champion eventually settled on the Elk River on land that his wife, the previously mentioned Martha Jefferson Walker, inherited. This section of the Elk River is known as Easter Ferry, from a ferry operated by Champion.
About the same time as this battlefield trip the descendants of Albert Marion McCormack held the first of a series of annual reunions. Helen McGrew and her daughter Carol joined many relatives in Poplar Creek Cemetery at the end of the afternoon where a military marker from the Veterans Department was placed over Albert's grave, He had fought in Company F of the Ninth Alabama regiment until captured in 1862, He was imprisoned at Warrenton, Virginia, until illness brought about his release before the war ended.
Besides these military men, many other early Limestone County settlers came to be known as part of the history of the Samuel Gilbert Easter family. Mace Gilbert and his wife Martha came from Virginia sometime before the 1850 census. Charles McCormack, the father of the Confederate soldier, came from Virginia prior to the 1830 census, and his wife, Mary Cowan came from Georgia. Starting out in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, David and Elizabeth Coffman built the oldest extant house in Jefferson County, Tennessee, before 1800 and then built another house in the Gaston Hollow area of Limestone County after 1823. Sally Foust is almost a latecomer to Limestone County, arriving in 1879 with her parents at the age of five from Dayton, Tennessee.
These many family lines came together in 1914 at the marriage of Samuel Gilbert Easter and Maud Estelle McCormack. Following their wedding they lived with, his parents on the family farm near the Coxey Community and today's Carpenter Road. This farmhouse was built back in 1845 by Champion's son, Samuel Walker Easter, soon after marrying Telecy Coffman, Their son Markham inherited the house and lived there with his first wife, Lydia Kennemer, until her death, and then with his second wife, Emily Gilbert.
Samuel and Maude had two children, George Gilbert, who died at the age of five, and Helen Elizabeth, born in 1921, After Samuel built a house on the present U.S. 72 near Clements School, he continued to manage the farm some two miles away. Living close to the school, Helen's parents were able to talk the principal into letting her start first grade at the age of five. After Samuel's parents died, he moved his family back to the family farm. He built and operated a small grocery store down the hill from the farmhouse. Helen then went to school in a buggy driven by a neighboring child. Next she went to school with the principal, who briefly boarded at their house. Later she rode a horse to school, which in those days maintained a stable out back for the students' use. In the days before driver's licenses, Helen was driving a car at about twelve years old, finally getting her license at about sixteen when licenses were first issued.
In 1939, prior to her last year of high school, Helen married another Limestone County resident, Herbert McGrew, a traveling lineman for the telegraph company about to transfer to a job in equipment maintenance. When he left for his first post in Alexandria, Louisiana, Helen stayed behind to finish her last year of high school before joining him.
After several years, the McGrews moved to Lexington, Kentucky, then to Sheffield, and finally to Decatur. Their first daughter Carol married John Qvercamp and lives next door in Decatur. Their other daughter, Linda, now lives in Atlanta.
Carol and her husband discovered and attended a reunion of the descendants of Louis Easter, a brother of Champion Easter who settled near Aberdeen, Mississippi. This group intends to expand to include all branches of the family and will meet next back near James Easter's Georgia plantation where the two brothers were born. Submitted hy: Carol Qvercamp, 413 Everett Dr., SW, Decatur, AL 35501. Sources: Family Records.
